Amoungst the things that suck, being lonely is one of them.
So is being stuck in a job that you no longer enjoy because the industry sucks and it isn't a good idea to look elsewhere.

I have to agree that being lonely is not fun. Been there done that.
However, in the last 15 years I believe that I can count the hours that I have been allowed to be alone (when not driving) on my fingers and TOEs.
My husband keeps SAYING that he will take the girls and give me a week-end in my own house alone - but somehow it never happens.
I guess that I should just count my blessings.

Cindy,
Plan a time for him to take them. Make the reservations and all. Don't feel guilty. Or, make reservations for yourself. Then, don't feel guilty. I'm a stay at home dad, and believe me, I need trout season, which opens tomorrow.

What

Cindy is right: not to be allowed to be alone when we need it, is as bad as to be alone when we do not want to.
(I read the last sentence twice trying to figure out what I said)

Which leads to the new variant: being lonely sucks, but being alone is a rare, fantastic treat.

I wonder how much 'alone time' you've had while posting 5,200 times to Javaranch...
Sometimes it's all in the perspective.

Actually there is some truth to that - sort of defensive isolation. Of course I do it with 400 people around me, and only in 5 minute increments while constantly being interrupted to do "real work". Somehow not the same as quiet time with no one tugging on your sleeve. It is VERY rare that I get JavaRanch time at home. Maybe an hour or so a weekend.
However - from that point of view - all the time that I ever spent doing homework and studying at college would have to be considered alone time - even though I was in a dorm room overflowing with other folks .

Wouldn't the contrapositive be that if ____ doesn't suck, you're not lonely? I'm assuming that "being lonely sucks" == "If you're lonely, ____ sucks". The "____" must be life or something like that.

OK. My two cents.
I was lonely for a good 30 years. I had a couple of sort of girlfriends, but for the most part all alone. Until 4 years ago, I met my wife.
Even though those lonely years sucked, I would go through them ten fold of them if it meant it would take that long to meet my wife.
So with that, know that one day it will change, and you will say, if this is the path that I had to take to reach here, then I would easily do it again.
I am trying to make you feel better with this story, but I can't seem to find the right words. Other than, trust me you will get to that time when all is perfect. Just have patience.

Actually being ALONE is what the Universe itself (god?) wants us to be: Everyman for himself!
Of course many people need to be with someone else (and they should be), not having evolved to the ultimate condition of being, which is alone.
Alone is how one can do the most for the unfortunate ones. Either one makes one's individual happiness the ultimate goal of life or one makes the ultimate goal of life the betterment of the not so fortunate of the Planet.
There is nothing inherently wrong with pursuing the benefit of your own young.
There is a BIG PROBLEM when you interfere in the lives of many for the limited benefit of yourself.
IT WILL NEVER FLY.
The Universe will take care of it. Just Watch It.
