Assuming that you are using Windows (and since you're using Excel...), set up an Excel ODBC pointing to your Excel file and then establish a connection through the JDBC-ODBC Bridge driver.

Joel's way is probably easier, but also consider Jakarta's POI project

With this you can read and write directly to the file, with no ODBC-JDBC.
