i want to know if i can open a MS word format file in java and some inputs on how to write data to MS word file.Since .doc file is a formatted file what care has to be taken?

The POI project referenced above doesn't yet provide much support for Word documents. It seems to be a very slowly progressing project that does promise a lot of abilities.
You might want to give The JACOB Project a try. Kai Ruhl wrote a tutorial that you may find useful.
