Passing updated data back to a Main GUI and listening to button clicks

I have a main class which implements a MainGUI, this in turn can implement another GUI where data can be changed on the object passed to it from the main GUI. However when I select the button to close this secondary GUI it closes fine but I can not get the text area in the main GUi to update with the data that was changed in the secondary GUI.
Can I register something in the main GUI to listen for the closing button in the secondary GUI? If so how? What code needs to go in the Main GUi to listen for it ?
