need help with Mozilla

when i visit a site with applets, mozilla "hangs up" saying "loading java applet" in the gray areas and "transferring data from..." at the bottom. it never finishes downloading. i cant find anything in the help or the menu.

Do you have jdk 1.3.1 or higher on your computer? Have you disabled the "Java(TM) Plug-in will be used as the default Java Runtime in the following browser(s):"?

i have jdk 1.30
i have no problem in IE or netscape 4.7
i dont have a clue how to disable the plug-in being the default
at least some of the applets are ones i wrote and they are Java 1 applets. so they dont use the plug-in. do they?
