Team,
I am wondering if there is any association of developers or something like that, where the developers get together and make products - for profit.
Much like sourceforge but for profit.

I doubt such a thing exists outside any conventional company.
If you look at the open source / free software community, I doubt you can find a similar organization on the same scale in terms of number of developers.
For what your are proposing, how would you divide the profits up between developers, given that in a projects lifetime, developers will join and leave? Are developers who make significant contributions to a project and then leave still entitled to a share of the profits?
If I may suggest, how about contributing to an existing open source / free software project? I think you would find that you would profit more in other ways, rather than hard currency.
Cheers!
Mark

I think MicroSoft started with very rich kid whose mother was on the board of directors of United Way with the person from IBM who was to make the discion about what software was to be included with the new IBM PC. It was not quite a bunch of college kids just getting together and deciding to start a company.

Now Cindy,
Is Microsoft, a company who would like nothing more than Java and its competitors to crawl under a rock and die, a company who has been found *guilty* of being anti-competitive a role model that we'd like to encourage?
Thought not

cindy,
wake up and smell the coffee. MS started when bill gate found some poor slob (contractor) to write MS-DOS for $5000 and convinced IBM to (i forget the business term) rather than selling it to them. i bet that programmer eventually comitted suicide.
