I realize that I'll have lots of studying to do, and I've got a long way to go, but I was wondering based on other's past experience if once you successfully completed all the assignments in Cattle Drive you felt comfortable enough to start preparing for the SCJP?
Also, I'm just curious to know how long it's taken others to complete all the assignments in Cattle Drive. My goal is to become a SCJP by June. I'm trying to determine whether or not this is a realistic goal, or should I shoot for a later date?
Thanks ~ Jeff

June is a suitable date, but it really depends on your experiences and how quickly you pick up programming languages.
Here is the path I have been taking (I came from a VB, ASP, HTML background, no C or C++):
Back in September, I started learning Java. Picked up Ivor Horton's Beginning Java, Read some of Bruce Eckels "Thinking in Java". After getting through the first 500 pages or so, I started preparing for the exam (around October).
For the exam I picked up RHE (Roberts, Heller, and Earnst) book on Certification and I started going through all of the chapters covering the exam plus I came here everyday and tried answering as many questions as I could. I also read the JLS and downloaded the API. If I came to a question I didn't know I looked it up in the API, or the JLS, or tried sample code. If I still didn't get it, I posted in the Certification forum.
Now I am taking tons of mock exams. Take as many as you can and feel comfortable that you are getting the grade that you want. I am getting around the mid 80's which I am trying for better, but that is my consistent score (about 5 out of the 10 to 12 I miss on a mock are because I am not reading it thorough enough.)
So, I will be sitting for the exam on January 31st. So that was about a total of 5 months of study, starting with no Java experience at all.
Basically though, if you REALLY want to learn it, you will. So set your goals and go for it. But don't start studying for the exam until you have a lot of the basics down. RHE would be impossible for me if I didn't already know most of the basics.

Thanks for input Bill, and best of luck on your exam on the 31st! Sounds to me like you'll pass that sucker easily.

I went on a three week course of Java with a background of knowing a tiny amount of C (little more than the basic operators). One of the weeks of the course was java enterprise (not tested in the SJCP) so not relevant. The course itself provided us with quite a lot of documentation but I didn't really use it and learnt from just one book - a revision guide. I passed the exam with 67%. Although the mark is not great, it shows that with your timescale passing is well within the realms of possibility. I have to say though that approaching the exam in the way I did (it was not a choice that I made, it was as part of my job) is not to be recommended. In the process of revision I wrote very little code and it is only now that I am putting all the knowledge into use and really learning how to code in java. I have the theory but in my opinion nothing beats experience.

That is also the opinion of most employers BTW, Bill, how did you do on your exam on the 31st of January?
