Escaping - &eacute vs \uxxxx

Hi there

I'm busy working on a translation software for work. We are taking php files, stripping them for the pieces to translate, translating them and building the php files again. All programatically using java.

Now, I see in some of the php files, the escape chars are noted as é and sometimes they are noted in unicode notation \uxxxx. But only when they are in unicode notation are they displayed properly.

What is the reason for this? Am I going to have to replace the &'s for \u's to start and then convert them again when finished?

Many kind regards,
Rachel
