The point seems to be to point out that LARGE countries have more athletes to select from and therefore have a better chance of selecting winners than small countries.
This is a revelation?

I dunno about that. What's the medal count for India in the last Winter Games? China?

I think the medal count tally has more to do with the economic prosperity of a country, which usually filters down to the quality of the training facilities and coaching staff, and also the opportunities to participate in sport from a very young age. I doubt whether the average young kid from India, China or Africa has the same means or opportunity as their equivalent in, say, the US, UK or Australia.
But you can rest assured that a single medal won by a small African country (eg. Ghana) will mean a lot more to the people of that country than all the medals won by their sporting superiors.
After all, it is the game that counts... right?

If some one takes the medals count table below as an indication of economic prospertiry, it is completely wrong.
India is third. Does it mean to say India is better than Canada and S. Africa. ?? Absolutely not.

Not a rule of thumb, but keep going down the list. The prosperity vs medal tally does average out...

If just regarding sports, you should not put China, Inida and Africa in the same list Furthermore, how can you consider US, UK, or Australia the same level?
The top 3 will always be US, Russia and China. I agree with Cindy that generally the size and population of a country rule.
