Do you think running a fansite is pathetic?

I run a fansite for my favourite comedian/actor Eddie Izzard. I have run other sites before for other actors who I admire.
I really enjoy doing it, I get to make my own site, have a solid subject matter and have to power to put on there whatever I like. I do it in my spare time, my friends however, think it's rather sad that I spend all day at work, working on one website then come home and spend hours working on another. They don't seem to get why I do it.
Then I asked myself, why DO i do it?
I do it because:
I admire the man himself, as a person as much for his georgous looks
I love building websites.
I like to have my mind occupied, so having a project to think about in my spare time keeps me happy, my friends prefer to go out to the pub ... that just doesn't work for me most days and I get bored!
Are these good enough reasons? Or am I really as pathetic as they think I am?

As long as you are happy and having a good time, who cares? Is that any worse of a hobby than photography, painting, or anything else?

My thoughts exactly. I think it just seems more pathetic because I'm publically standing out there and saying "I am a Fan" ... fans, no matter who they are fans of are generally seen as pathetic delusional little creatures with no life!

Plus it gives you a chance to try out new things without getting fired for messing it up

i dont think it's pathetic at all. those are all very good reasons. in fact here is the one i made.
http://www26.brinkster.com/javaguy/everclear/
of course im not as dedicated as you are angela. i didnt even finish it let alone maintain it. i made it for the same reasons you did. i admire them. it is solid content. it gave me an oportunity to be creative and try new things. it is also the biggest site i have made page-wise although a lot of it was copy and paste.

Thanks guys!
Just realised I never posted the link to my site.
It's going through as bit of a transition at the moment cos I'm re-writing the whole thing (for the thrid time) this time though is using a PHP based content management tool .. which makes things MUCH easier to play about with. Plus I got to learn a lot about PHP.
So the official URL is www.eddie-izzard.com ... however the current (live) stuff is at www.mycgiserver.com/~apoynton ... this is JSP .. but my new PHP stuff will be taking over from that soon when I've finished fiddling with it.
The current site is pretty big but this new one is at least twice as big!!

angela,
main page looks pretty good. assuming that like me you welcome criticism, i will mention that i have to scroll horizontally a bit at full-screen 800X600 which is a little surprising after skimming briefly through your page source and seeing the relative widths in your tables.

Do what you want to do and you feel happy, till it does not hurt anyone physically or mentally.
And building sites .. I think its good way of being creative.
KEEP IT UP

Some folks will thnk you are anorak, so what who cares? Sites like yours are what make the web so excellent and so different from publishing where you need a whole bunch of suites, money and meetings to get anything done.
Eddie Izzard is the type of person who you think "I'd like to have him round to dinner".

The current slashdot poll is only slightly on topic.
