I think everyone in this industry need to do something for ourselves, even you are not laid off, because eventually that will help you, especially you are not younger tomorrow.
1) start bashing open source software, esp. its quality
2) tell your friends, collegues, the harm the open source software did to the industry and refuse to contribute anything to it
3) if you are a manager, do not, and never (even when things are getting better), hire someone without CS degree
4) start to not coorperate with out sourcing jobs, that will directly hurt your job security; try to use communication as excuse as much as possible
5) even you know some of your counterparts do good job in india, never endorse it
6) stop giving free technical advise anywhere. it makes you feel cool, but you are going to be scrowed if everyone does that. in fact, open source is the same mentality.
7) for those technical gurus, esp. those know how to write kernal programs, please write a few virus to those open source software, like linux, apache.
8) i don't think we can have an union for IT because of its culture; however, we can help to start a movement do the following"
- destroy open source, including convience those contributers, tell them the harm it has done, communicate each other how to hack open source systems
- reveal those out sourcing companies and the key figures
- reveal those companies that did lay off and the key figures, if you are a hiring manager and interview a person who endorse layoff in the past, don't hire him/her
we understand there is no clean world, but "do it by myself, do it by now" will definitely help you and your fellow IT collegues.
