Link to BBC News says: The computer (which is on board of a spaceship) is running Red Hat, a version of the Linux operating system, and is maintaining a connection with the Goddard Space Flight Center which will to try to contact the onboard PC more than 140 times over the duration of the shuttle mission STS-107.
Unfortunately every time they want to send a new command they are forced to recompile the kernel, update several dependent RPMs, and execute multiple shell scripts.
Do keep an eye on posts with subjects 'URGENT' or 'IMMEDIATE' in the Linux/Unix forum now onwards. You never know..

As opposed to the whole space station firing itself into a trajectory down to mother Terra, just because one of the crew members opened an email with the subject "I Love you?"
