An experiment you can all help me with. I'm expecting a son in about 6 weeks. We already have a name selected, but I'd like you to pick it apart: a pre-emptive strike before he gets to school Here we go: Tobias Anthony O'Meara We are keen on the name 'Tobias', still luke warm about 'Anthony' (its my middle name and the father-in-law's middle name) Be brutal. (Oh, and don't pick on the "O'Meara" bit, that stays )
I vote for "Jim". Good idea, Map. Of course the given name should really be "James" in this case. And in that case the other name should really be Tiberius rather than Tobias, and it should be the middle name rather than first. After that, well... are you really committed to "O'Meara" as the last name? Seriously though, TAO sounds cool. The kids he goes to school with will be way too young for the Toby/Kunta Kinte meme. Heck, probably over half the people here don't know what I'm talking about (which isn't a new thing ).
How about "Spear"! That's a kick ass name! Imagine being eight years old with an awesome name like that. How can you not rule the neighborhood when your name is THE MIGHTY SPEAR!
And as an adult it would be a pretty fantastic name too.

Just curious... would you mind telling me what is it that you look for while giving a name.. Is it like picking from a list of names which you & the wife like or does it go like you having a particular thing/theme in mind and finding synonyms for the meaning and picking from the list or is it like whatever the wife decides...?

The best advice I've ever received on naming a child is to realize that you are naming a *person*, not a *baby*, and to chose something that will travel well with them throughout life. Test out a name by putting "aunt" or "uncle" (as appropriate) in front of it. Or something like "All rise, Judge < namety name name > presiding!" (If the name sounds good with "And dancing at the center pole tonight is < namety name name >," you might want to reconsider.)
Speaking of names and O'Meara, I encountered someone else from that diaspora a few months back. I saw a SUV with a personalized license plate "OMEARA". I think it was from New Jersey. We were both driving west on the New York Thruway for hours. Seriously for hours. I'd pass him with a pack of cars, then 15 minutes later he'd pass me, etc. His car was in the parking lot when I stopped for lunch at the rest stop. Then a couple hours later I stopped for ice cream and a pee break, and his car was there too. Actually, I used the urinal a few spots down from the dude. I felt I *should* strike up a conversation after all that highway interaction, but didn't have the nerve. "Um, excuse me. Yes, I realize we're both peeing, but I've been noticing you for the past 3 hours. Um. It's just that I know this *O'Meara* guy from Australia, just like you. Er, the O'Meara part, not the 'from Australia' part. Actually, I don't *really* know this O'Meara guy. We just have the same birthday and hang out together on the internet." Now my story for "Friedman-Hill" is that I pass by "Freeman Hill Road" in Moretown, Vermont, a few times a year. I always think of Ernest. Now I'll think of both Ernest and Zachary.
