i`m a Final Year Student Faculty Of Engineering I'm Aiming For Building a Simulation program For VoIP or WCDMA so could java be the right choice for me or i should work with other language , i know that Matlab will do it too easy but i like to do it in java so i gain the practical knowledge of programing with java and add the project as an experience in my CV . i didn't find any classes or libs related to communication engineering ( coding ,encoding , fourier transform , .....etc) if any , could any one tell me about it and where to find it , so waiting for your opinions and advices . i will really appreciate that from You
thanks in advance

Welcome to JavaRanch!

Your question is a bit advanced for the beginner forum, so I'm promoting it to the intermediate forum where you might get better responses.

Hi Muhammad, I found this on a quick google:

http://www.ee.ucl.ac.uk/~mflanaga/java/

He has a range of java functions including fourier transforms etc.

Might be worth checking out.

At First I need To thank both mark for redirecting the topic to the right place , and of course dave bales for his answer , but all the classes in this pages are mathematics or physicist , not a bit about communication systems and signal propagation in mediums .

about the first part of my question is Java the right choice or there is another way , i`m going to do :
1 - an interface allow inserting devices and watching the signal transfer between transmitter and receiver .
2 - a complete block diagram of Both Transmitter and Receiver and also signal propagation inside them both

so i think i need to design a 2D Graphics an simple animations on it .
is java able to do this ? and if
what courses and parts of java should i study with knowing that it will be a stand alone Application (Desktop application) no wep.
waiting for your answers ...

I think if you want to practice your jave, then choose java.
here is a link about fourier transforms
http://www.developer.com/java/other/article.php/3457251
maybe help you ,
But I think you want simulate the wcdma, maybe you need code the class yourself
design a 2D Graphics an simple animations on it .
java can do it easy

Hi Muhammad,

I think I understand what you are trying to do.

If you are in your final year, I would concentrate on your project, that is, use the most familiar tool to you to achieve a good final year project. If you try to learn a new skill such as java, you are introducing a new element of risk into your project, and you may find yourself in trouble towards the end of the year with a half built solution that may be rushed and not as good as it could be.

If you know what you need to do in Matlab, then I reckon that you should use that tool. At the end of the day you will be marked on the success of your project, not the coding tool that you have used to build it.

You can always pick up java afterwards in your own time without the burden of a project and its deadline.

Hope that this helps.

I did something similar for my final year dissertation, Implementation of viterbi's algorithm which i guess you may know is a forward error correcting code.

The project was made up of a Hardware transmiter/receiver and software for the encoding and decoding part.

I used C and C graphics, I have been in java for the last 6 years but I would still use C when a hardware interface is involved.

i think i get more than what i have expected , so thanks every one
- first
zebatinsky you are 100% right that is really what i was thinking about , will i finish on time with got quality or... , but in the same time i don`t know much about mat lab so i have to learn it . the only difference here between it and java that it has predefined devices and functions that will support me very much , but java deserve a try too

- second
Devesh H Rao i will not implement any hard where in my project as a main objective so C will not be necessary

and i have decided to take the risk ( its life ) and begin with java so now what courses and books will i mostly use to do my project

and of course i will be so annoying to you but i depend on you to help me , and i`m sure i have chosen the right people to depend on ;-0
waiting for your answers .
