Marilyn and I have been working on this new tool that reads in a database meta data and writes out a bunch of java classes that provide strongly typed java access to the database. For example, a table called "Employee" would end up as a class called "EmployeeTable" that would have methods like "getRow()", "deleteRows()", etc. Every table class would have an inner class called "Row" that would have getters and setters for every filed (column) as well as methods like "update()". An optional class can be generated called "MockEmployeeTable" used for unittesting. We've been calling this "Tammy" which I now realize is a pretty weak name. I want something more JavaRanch-ish. Acronyms don't seem to be working out. The key words would be: Simple Database Access Facade Row Gateway Pattern ... How about "Tractor"? It's an engine that will go in the code barn .... What do you guys think? Any ideas?
Whew! Not exactly the subject-matter I anticipated when I read the title - Name my "Thing"!!!

Elaine, I believe instead it would be "Name my Thang" Paul, how about Bailer? It takes in a whole bunch of goobledy-gook and spits it out in a nice, clean package

hi Paul Is JavaRanch software product? If yes,I suggest that JR.Tractor 1.0 Do everybody think the version is needed? In my opinion, most of the softwares contain version because easy to maintain and update. Suggestion only~~~~
Bailer: I thought about that. The thing that made me toss the idea was that it's spelled "Baler" and people might not find it easily through google. That always seems to be an important part of naming things these days, is picking names that people will easily spell correctly. Software product: This will be a JavaRanch product just like the stuff in the javaranch common package.
Oh yeah (since this is MD), my "thang" has no name, but I think I'll keep it that way. "I went though the desert on a thang with no name. It felt good to get out from the rain."

Paul, things go better with Coke! How about one of these. BuckRake: Windrows mown hay - old timer. JacksonFork: Stacks loose hay - old timer. BaleWagon: Gathers and hauls baled hay - new timer. HarrowBed: See BaleWagon. Peterbilt: Class 8 Tractor

I don't think you should be so intimate with your thang as to name it. As they say, play with it, but don't talk to it.

Ack, my bad on bailer, you think I would know by now... unless of course you want to go with something that bails you out of having to build these objects yourself And since we're talking about "thangs", I think Peterbilt is quite appropriate

I kinda like "tarp". It can stand for something like "table and row package", or it could just describe a useful piece of general equipment, often found on a farm. Do you use the name "tarp" for a waterproof fabric sheet in the USA? I see them on the top of haystacks around here all the time. http://dictionary.reference.com/search?q=tarp
Yes, we have several tarps at the farm. I'm on the phone now with Marilyn and she has suggested "Jenny the Code Generator". This goes along with a theme within the rest of the JavaRanch common code:
Buffy the string buffer Percy the persistance layer
What do you guys think of this one?

Well for starters one, drawback, when Barbs asks what are you doing ? I can't say I'm playing with Jenny
I called my persistence layer the Castor Wrapper Component I hope you can come up with a better name than that. "The 'Range" - where the deer and the antelope play.
