Hi !
I am planning to buy a cell phone, but i'm new and don't really understand this stuff. I have some basic questions. Kindly help me.
The place where i live there are four main mobile service providers. Two have GSM networks, one has GPRS network and one is on AMP.
1) So i should get a cell phone that supports either GSM/GPRS networks rather than one that supports TDMA/CDMA. The way i get it, if a cell phone supports TDMA or CDMA, then it will not work on GSM/GPRs and vice-versa. Am i right ?
2) If i get a cell phone that only supports GPRS, then will it work with GSM network? As i see it GPRS is an extension of GSM.
3) GSM phone is SIM based, right ? And same will of ourse be true for GPRS.
4) If anyone knows some good web sites where i can get this sort of stuff cleard up please let me know.

Regards
Danish

GSM stands for Global standard for mobile phones this technology is older and soon going to be obsolete as bandwith avilable is very small and the quality of sound is poor it is also termed as TDMA technology i.e Time division Multiple Access
CDMA or Code Division Multiple Access is a new technology and is much better than GSM phones it has got high bandwidth and very good Audio/Video Quality
You can see GSM/TDMA as dial up internet connection and CDMA as cable internet connection

I don't understand how GSM is older and soon to be obsolete? I just bought a new phone that supports this GSM network, and right now the coverage in the US is not that complete. The reason is that it's still being built up. The guy at the store said it was "new". My understanding was that it was something which would be the standard in the US a couple years from now.
I'm just saying what I heard. I really don't know much about cell phones, I never owned one before. I just recently bought the T68i phone from amazon.com with tmobile. With rebate, the phone is free.

GSM (global system for mobile telecommunication) ma8 its not absolete technology there is 2nd generation GSM network..and then 2.5G(GPRS)..edge..3GSM(video enabled) GSM is rare in US but almost a defacto standard in Europe, and in some part of Asia and Africa.

1. GSM used TDMa (time division mulitple access).it works in 890 MHz - 960 MHz band in EUrope and asia and 1900MHZ in US. So if you have bought a GSM phone in US it will not work in Europe/asia unless it is dual band
that is capable of hoping between 900mhhz band and 1900mhz. And then there is also Dual Mode phone which support both AMPS(analog transmission) and TDMA(digital) transmission technology. If you want your phone to work in CDMA network then you have to get tri mode phone AMPS/TDMA/CDMA.

2) If i get a cell phone that only supports GPRS, then will it work with GSM network? As i see it GPRS is an extension of GSM.
YEs GPRS(GENERAL PACKET RADIO SERVICE) is extension of GSM its 2.5G. meant for hight speed data access non-voice.
3) GSM phone is SIM based, right ? And same will of ourse be true for GPRS.
YES
4) If anyone knows some good web sites where i can get this sort of stuff cleard up please let me know.
