Food for thought.
No Indian would use the word "untouchable": it is a Western concept, not a translation of an Indian term. Further, both phrases, "Beloved of God," Harijan, and "scheduled caste," refer to a large number of different groups, all underprivileged but by no means the same, either in traditional occupation or in social status. Even a westernized Indian would not say "untouchable" because in India the word, a remnant of the 19th century, has been out of use too long.

thanks,

Don't believe in it personally. But in my country people still do. I don't know why because the caste system basically has its root in the profession that the family had been pursuing since generations. A soldier's son would become a soldier. A carpenter's son becomes a carpenter. As a result, the same name is for both the caste as well as the profession. But now it is different. We do not follow the profession that of our caste.
By birth, I belong to a so called high caste called Kayastha. This caste is that of accountants. Our caste God Chitragupta maintained records (not monetary ones, but records of our bad and good deeds!!!) for the chief creator, Brahma. But now I am into Software Engg. I think engineering per se comes under the purview of Vishvakarma - the God of all mechanics, carpenters, weavers, potters, etc. Now most of these professions are what one called low-castes. So, I guess by profession we all belong to the low-caste.

Don,
Why China is torturing Tibeteans? Why his holiness Dalai Lama is made to look for haven in India?

Well said , Sara.
An attitude shared by many an IT manager - blinkered, short-sighted, the one-upmanship type.

Don, what are you trying to get at? i.e What have we learnt so far ? I know this is in the Meaningless Drivel forum , but while we are killing time ..
90% of Indian Entrepreneurs can trace their roots to a lower-caste.

90% of higher-caste have probably been absorbed into lower castes. Their high debts being a driving factor.
The same can be said of most Western Societies.
But what is true is that there is poverty, and India has done remarkably in reversing this somewhat through education and as far as I know without a lot of Aid. The major credit goes to India alone ( and charities, Mother Teresa ).
Though without the corruption it could have been better.
10, 100 times more aid in other parts of the world (Africa, S America) have reduced whole areas to a grinding poverty. Previously these countries enjoyed quite a high standard of living. (I know 'cos I grew up in some of them).
I think it's fair to say that India has got past the caste system, somewhat, to her credit.
Education, personality are valued more.
But now the DOWRY system is a different can of worms altogether. This has got worse over time as Indian society gets more materialistic.
To understand it think bank manager who has re-mortgaged your house several times over.
Isn't Aid a kind of a loan from a World Bank?
Ouch !

Sorry Don. I've broken the meaningless drivel rule. I usually save that for my other posts in other forums.
To continue the spirit..
low-caste aspires, perspires (works hard)
High-caste only perspires (sweats)
I must be low-caste. (I'd like to think I am)

what other people think about you is irrelevant. an accountant would call me trailer trash but i would call him a half-wit who had to take a job doing arithmetic.

If "caste is outdated in india" , why do you want to discuss it, Don?
