I was wondering who knows the story why SUN people called it
"Java" which is an island name in Indonesia. Java was initially
called "Oak". Why they changes the name because they went to
Java island for a vacation and change their mind?
Who knows the story behind this?

IIRC, "Oak" was taken, and "Java" was chosen, because

  • "Java" wasn't taken, and
  • Coffee gave them the idea.

it seems they were sipping coffee while deciding the course of action and also java is a kind of coffee bean.

Bill Joy, James Gosling, Mike Sheradin, Patrick Naughton were all members of
the Green project set up by Sun Microsystems. The goal of the Project was to do research in the area of application of computers in the consumer electronics market. The vision of the project was to develop "smart" consumer electronic devices that could all be centrally controlled and programmed from a handheld-remote-control-like device. According to Gosling, the goal was to build a system that would let us do a large, distributed, heterogeneous network of consumer electronic devices all talking to each other. Mike Sheradin was to focus on business development, Patrick Naughton was to begin work on the graphics system, and James Gosling was to identify the proper programming language for the project. Gosling began with C++, but soon after was convinced that C++ was inadequate for this particular project. His extensions and modifications to C++ were the first steps towards the development of an independent language that would fit the project objectives. He named the language "Oak" while staring at an oak tree outside his office window. The name "Oak" was later dismissed due to a patent search, which determined that the name was copyrighted and used for another programming language Finally, inspiration struck one day during a trip to the local coffee shop where they decided to name the language as Java because the contents of the coffee comes from an island named Java. Others have speculated that the name Java came from several individuals involved in the project: James gosling, Arthur Van hoff, Andy bechtolsheim.

Thanks Neeraj Vasudeva-
Your detail story about Java inventors enlarged my visions. It seems that people's thought is related to their life and environment they are with.
Long live inventions!

If anyone still wants an acronym, one that I find fits very well is "Just Another Virtual Architecture".
