To become familiar with java you must read a good book.
see "anyone know a good java book?" topic in this forum.
Then you must do some real coding. It is very important to do this by your own. After some real coding go to javaranch and ask as many questions as possible. But make sure you tested before you make a topic otherwise other ranchers will recon that you ask question you'd had come up with by yourself. And when real help is needed you'll have problem finding it.
Good luck

It's also a good idea to search through the forums before posting a question to see if anyone else has had the same problem in the past.

I recommend the Cattle Drive. The programs are relatively challenging, and you will learn great optimization tips from true professionals.
