Can any one explain to me in which language is the java complier and virtual machine written?

Suns comiler and JVM was written mostly in C++. However there is at least ONE compiler out there that was written completely in java.
However the JVM that are in browsers are whatever the vendor chose to use. I would expect to see a lot of Visual Basic in the Microsoft stuff (but I never really checked).

I thought Sun's javac was written in java (which is why it is so slow ;-0)
