Directory Size

Hi,
I'm trying to figure out how to get the current size and max size of a directory. Can anyone help me out here? I prefer not to use the os's commands to get this info.
I suppose I can get the current size by adding up all the file sizes but this does not seem to be the best way.
Thanks.
Yoo-Jin
