Hi,howya doing all..Well,I'm not doing so good,,going on borderline insane!!I'm new to the Java language..Got me a JDK,,but hmm,,?,,?From what I understand you run it from a Dos command prompt,,right,,well XP is 100% Dos free, what am I to do???!!
I've been working with JBuilder, but it's a major pain, pretty much have to learn that software, instead of starting with the actual langusge,,know what I mean??I want to work with the actual code instead of all the visual layout stuff and generated code..
Any one have any advice for me??Please,,seems everywhere I go I get ignored with this question jahmeditation@nescape.net

I'm not using Windows XP, but some people around here have been using it for a few months both with jdk1.3 and jdk1.4 without problem. Perhaps one of them will see your post and have a suggestion.

well I believe the command is still called "cmd.exe", so you can locate it (It was in WinNT/System32 on my NT machine-it might have moved in XP) and make a shortcut to it on your desktop.
Or you can open up the Run... dialog box and type cmd.

Yep, "cmd.exe" is available in the "System32" subdirectory of your "Windows" ("WinXP" or whatever) directory in Windows XP.
Good Luck.

Hi,
Well, i'm using JDK 1.3 on XP for a while now and I don't have any problem...
I think builder is not a good start to learn the language, just do some console stuff under notepad or with a freeware IDE if you find one. Personnaly I use visualslickedit but it's not a free one.
To get you started, try some Baldwin's tutorial there :
Baldwin's java tutorial
Good luck and have fun !
Brett
by the way to launch the command line, try :
start menu -> execute -> cmd

Isn't the command prompt located under the Accessories folder now?

That's where it is in my W2000: Start menu > Programs > Accessories > CommandPrompt
But Brett's tip above is faster (on my machine it's start menu > run > (type in) cmd )

You might want to try cygwin (Cygwin site) which gives you a unix console window under Windows. I'm using it quite happily under Win2K... don't know of any reason it won't run under XP.
hth,
