So here I am, sitting right in the path of Hurricane Isabel. By the time it gets here, winds should be down to 40mph, they say -- not gonna tear my roof off, but could do minor damage. There may be a foot of rain in 24 hours -- yuk. And power outages. And worst part is that school is cancelled for two days, followed by a weekend. So I'm stuck at home, probably with no power soon, with a cranky five-year-old and a cranky pregnant wife, for four days. Bleah.
Shoulda stayed in California.

Q. Why do most hurricanes have female names?
A. Because when they come they are wet and wild. When they go they take away your house and your cars

I've been "enjoying" the hurricane (or tropical storm or whatever) as well. I've been at the fire station I volunteer at in Maryland since 10:30pm Wednesday night, and I probably won't be leaving until sometime Saturday morning. In the 24 hours from 07:00am Thursday thru 07:am this morning we ran 38 calls, which is abnormally busy for us. Mostly motor vehicle accidents (some quite bad), electrical wires down, transformers on fire, flooding conditions, the occasional imminent structural collapse, and other storm related stuff. What I don't understand is why the hell so many people thought it was a good idea to be out in some of this crap? Parts of roads were flooded, trees were falling down and blocking roads and sometimes landing on occupied cars, electricity was out in several locations which meant no street lights or traffic signals, of course the wind was blowing pretty good, and yet there were still far too many people on the roads. Sometimes people just aren't too bright. On the plus side, the storm could have been far worse here then it ended up being.

My power is back on!
We lost power and phone service thursday evening, and just got it back on now, Sunday night. Doesn't sound like a long time, but try it with my daughter
I know a lot of people had a harder time of it, so I shouldn't complain. But boy, am I happy to have my computer back...
