Ooooh man, we made our last luxury purchase right after we found out about the baby - it was a BIG Samsung LCP TV. I've wondered what it might look like with an XBox. My daughter insists on the PS2, though. I haven't made up my mind (for that matter, I haven't decided whether I really need another time-sucking distraction - after all, I have MD ).

Nothing like playing on the XBox (for that matter any game console) and your girl friend pissed off on the background and yelling 'get off the f@#$ing xbox'.

I prefer the computer, but since the subject of this forum is xbox or ps2 then I guess I'd have to go with ps2 since xbox only has a few good games. Although xbox is meant to be technologically superior.

PS2 cause I'm a PS kid and they do better games at the moment (although I mostly use a PC)

Hmmm... okay, then, how about naming one or two games which prove to you why one console is better than the other?
I'm probably not one to care, actually, because I'm not a big FPS kind of guy; I like strategy games where you create hundreds of little dudes to do your dirty work. Although I'd be open to something like a REALLY good RPG, where you could create a few characters and hack and slash and level 'em up and go on quests and suchlike.
Back in the olden days I played Shining Force, and I thought that was totally awesome, but I know it's really dated now. (Showing my age, I know.)

I thought it was the other way around. The XBox is newer and runs at a faster bus speed and has higher resolution, but because the PS2 has better technology (including dedicated chips to handle graphics and their version of an AI) there is no compelling reason for choosing the XBox. As I understand it, where XBox does beat PS2, the differences are such that you have to compare 2 systems side by side to notice the difference. Note that this entire paragraph is my opinion. I no longer have references to reviewers stating this, and could not find anything on the net to support or contradict it - I am very willing to have others refute it.
Ny choice comes down to 2 things: number of games (PS2 wins) and support for Linux (Sony have an OEM kit to let your PS2 run Linux. Microsoft don't seem to support Linux on the XBox for some reason - although I understand that a brave person can get Linux working on the XBox if they really try.

For me:
Grand Theft Auto 3 and Vice City
Tony Hawks 3 & 4 (available on X-box too though)
Tenchu 3
Headhunter
Doesn't prove anything necessarily, I just prefer these types of games.

XBOX because you get to play Tom Clancy's games on it. I love Ghost Recon - Island Thunder. Going to buy Splinter Cell over this weekend. Not to forget the greatest games for XBOX, Halo!

The cool thing about the Xbox is that... if you've got an HDTV, there are a number of games that run in High Definition. At a minimum, every Xbox game runs in progressive scan mode (480p). On the PS2, there are a few titles that support 480p progressive scan and no support at all for high definition. If you compare Soul Calibur 2 running at 720p on an HD set to the PS2 version of the game, there's no comparison. The Xbox version is gorgeous.
Also the Xbox Live network is pretty cool... PS2 supports online gaming as well.
So yeah, the Xbox is definitely better (newer) tech, but if you don't think it has any good games then I'd get the PS2.
BTW, Grand Theft Auto 3 and Grand Theft Auto:Vice City are being released for Xbox soon as a 2 game set for $49.95. Supposed to have enhanced graphics as well. Thats cool, although these games have been out forever on the PS2.

Are there any strategy-type games that are worth it? I enjoy a good car race, but I'm too old for any of the twitch-finger stuff.

Joe,
the current kick-arse RPG for the xbox is Starwars Knights of the Old Republic. Definitely no twitchy-trigger skills are required for this game.
Also to note, I'm fairly convinced that Strategy games are much better suited to being run on a PC, I'd much rather use a mouse than an xbox/ps2 game controller, plus not all of us have HDTV support, so those little characters can be pretty difficult to see sometimes.
My list for xbox would go something like this:
- Halo
- Hunter - The Reckoning
- Splinter Cell
- Ghost Recon (orig. + Island Thunder)
- Starwars Knights of the Old Republic

Well, here's the deal. I want to get a box to try and extend the things my daughter and I do together. She's in high school, and the things we have in common are dwindling.
It turns out that she's biased to PS2 because she loves Crazy Taxi. Me, I like the RPGs, as I said, and of course I'd love to take advantage of our monster HDTV, but it looks like PS2 may win by Daughterial Decree.

That's pretty cool about HDTV support in the xbox. I know PS2 was built to be "modifyable" so maybe HDTV support could be added by Sony ... I don't know if that's possible.
To play PS2 on-line you need to buy extra hardware I think, it doesn't come as standard. So maybe I'll have to invest in an xbox soon ... or wait till PS3! Sigh ...

Ive owned both a PS2 and an Xbox and Id have to say that the PS2 just edges it out over the Xbox. Technology wise, the Xbox wins hands down. Better graphics and it has pretty good anti-aliasing. PS2 is reknowned for its 3D games having "jaggies".
But the PS2 has a wider variety of games, and a larger number of AAA titles.
If I was Joe, and I was buying a console for his daughter, then the PS2 wins out as there are a lot of family type games available for the PS2. For example dancing games like Dance Dance Revolution, or even the Eye Toy Accessory thats coming out for the PS2 in the USA soon.
And if its RPGs youre after the PS2 again wins hands down with the Final Fantasy series, as well as other games such as Kingdom Hearts and Disagea.
Sportswise, youve got Madden 2004 and Tiger Woods 2004, both playable online. You can get XBox versions of these games, but EA have removed the online facilities.
Oh, and Gran Turismo 4 is a PS2 exclusive ;-p
Saying that, Im thinking of getting an XBox again (I only had it for a week, and that was to play Halo :-) ) for games such as Star Wars: Knights of the Old Republic, Jet Set Radio Future and of course, Halo 2 ;-)
Cheers,
Mark

Dance Dance Revolution is coming soon for the Xbox. Its listed as $64.95 on ebgames.com for preorder which includes a dance pad controller. A friend of mine told me it will support Xbox Live for playing your friends online, and also you'll be able to download new tracks for the game as well which is pretty cool after you've gone through all the ones that come with.
EA is a pretty lazy company, they seem to like to write 1 game engine and then port it to all the systems as easily as possible so that none of them particularly take advantage of cool things that system offers. Sega does things much better with their sports franchises which DO support Xbox Live and are very good games as well.
GT4 should be pretty sweet... Xbox has Sega GT which is a similar type of game and I think a new version is coming out soon.
All in all, I'd say just get all the systems I picked up a Gamecube pretty much just to play the Legend of Zelda game for it which is awesome...

I finished playing Bruce Lee for XBOX and I must say I enjoyed it quite a bit (my hangover from the Double Dragon era..) It looked and felt crappy to begin with but once your learnt all the custom moves it was kick ass!! His movements were so realistic it was unbelievable. I wonder if they'll ever release another Bruce Lee game again.
