problem viewing applet in ie6

i have a problem viewing applets in ie6.
it's not showing anything than the small red cross.
ive installed java correctly and in the ie settings java is activated (1.4.2).
but it's still asking me to download the jvm.
applets are working in mozilla and opera.
it's a offline pc.
how can i manually activate applets?
