Parent class?

Hello world,
I writting a program which has a public class and in that class I have several calls to other non public classes which are in the same package. I just wanted to know for those non public class do they have to have a parent class. I really don't understand what is a parent class and what it is used for.

java.lang.Object is the superclass of all java classes.
