You can't compare .NET and JAVA. .NET is a framework that encoumpasses several MS languages (C#, VB.NET, C++.NET, J++.NET). Java is a programming language.
A better question might be, what are the advantages of learning Java over C# or J2EE over .NET Web Development (ASP.NET).
Your question is kind of like asking what are the advantages of living in Wichita, KS over Oklahoma.

Java is free. Eclipse is free. Linux is free. Anything free in M$? Besides updates, patches, hotfixes, worms and viruses?
Who coined the term hotfix anyway? What a goofy word.

At least Microsoft releases free patches and service packs. If you got Solaris you don't get them unless you sign up for an expensive "maintenance contract" first...
Now who's the better neighbour?
