Can anybody point me to a page or resource on the web which contains a list of simple problems that can be solved to improve one's understanding of programming logic as well as learn java by solving problems.

Head on over to and look at the exercises there. Have a look at the
Sun Java Beginner Tutorial.
The sun website is an excellent resource for learning.
Otherwise search for Java Tutorials...
