I've been studying the Bates and Sierra book. I don't quite understand the shift operator and bits. Is there a better explanation of these somewhere on the web?

Welcome to JavaRanch!
Sometimes it's helpful to just read a few different explanations of a topic, whether one explanation is better than another may not be important.
So, for another explanation of this bit manipulation stuff, you might appreciate a read of the "Cat and Mouse Games with Bits" story of The JavaRanch Campfire Stories.

I've read that book too. Really, what do you not understand? See if I could explain it to you?

Thanks. The cat and mouse example really helped. I now understand it.
