/** A brief background on me. I'm a 22 male and act 4 The only language I know well enough to say I can program in is VB (Of Course) I started reading about java and I think I am falling in love with it. Here are some questions that I would like a bit more information on. */
Java uses Sockets and not winsock Correct?
I can't find anything about handeling cookies with java. Could anyone help me out?
Is Java capable of creating an OCR? (I figure it must be I was able to do it in VB.)
What is the Differance between a Referane Variable and a Variable?
What would be a good source to learn about JDBC and connecting to a vBulletin web forum? Ie. Accessing the User's in the Database.

Ok, now I've got a question that is hard for me to show but its basically about what should be in my classes. I've thought about this for about 3 hours drawn it out about 1000 times and this is what I've finally come up with.
Ok I am making a program that I've already made in Vb now I want to practice some more java and expand my scope.
//Blerp's Revenage
//The First 4 Classes I think Should be 1 Class because they are common in all programs of this sort.

I can answer the question related to cookies.
Servlet specification of J2EE(Java Enterprise edition) that is used for web access related projects supports the cookie class.
JSP(Java server pages) can also be programmed to enable and access cookies in a web realm.

Hi Brian,
Welcome to JavaRanch!

"Winsock" is (was) the name of a library you used to have to add to Windows to get TCP/IP support. These days, of course, TCP/IP is built into Windows.
A Java implementation builds its TCP/IP support on top of whatever facilities the host system provides.

OCR == Optical Character Recognition? I'm actually guessing it's some kind of Windows-specific module, a VB control or something. No, Java out-of-the-box doesn't offer that kind of OS-specific system integration. There are third-party products that allow you to

What is the Differance between a Referane Variable and a Variable?

A "reference" variable is a pointer to an object, while a variable of primitive type is, well, not a pointer. You could look here for more info.

Have a look at the JavaRanch Bunkhouse for reviews of lots of JDBC books. There's also the JDBC chapter of Sun's online Java tutorial.

Actually VB doesn't have any OCR controls I had to write my own code. Basically breaking the picture down to 0's and 1's that way I could make any picture that had words & numbers in it readable for the code. I am sure java can do it all the same. If this guy can do it, http://www.javaocr.com/ , so can I. I'll just get to that when I will I guess
Thanks for your replys

I was actually joking about OCR standing optical character recognition. I really did think you were asking about some kind of Windows component-type thingy.

I agree. Here's the link: http://aspose.com/file-tools
