I'd like to have a grid/table, for example a 5x5 grid would look like a battleship table, with each cell labeled A1 through E5. When a user would click cell A1, they could rename it and edit a few individual variables for the cell, perhaps from a small bar of options at the bottom.
The information would need to be able to be saved and retrieved later.
Is this possible? If you need more information or anything, please post here or email me back! Thanks!

I'm sure many folks around here are interested to help you learn.
As you work on your project, if you get stuck or have a question, don't hesitate to ask for help to learn to understand something.
If you've no idea how to get started, then let me suggest spending some time learning the basics of Java programming. Here is a list of free on-line Java tutorials and books that I have found useful:
  • Sun's Java Tutorial
  • Introduction to Computer Science using Java by Bradley Kjell
  • Introduction to Programming Using Java by David J. Eck
  • Dick Baldwin's Java Programming Tutorials
  • Interactive Programming In Java by Lynn Andrea Stein
  • Bruce Eckel's Thinking In Java
  • JavaRanch's own Campfire Stories
  • Allen B. Downey's How To Think Like A Computer Scientist
