Manipulating windows applications in Java

I'm fairly new to java and I was wondering if anyone could tell me how practical java is for manipulating windows applications (e.g formatting Excel spreadsheets). If it's possible can someone recommend a good source to read up on this kind of thing?

I just love the fact that Java has an API for practically anything.

Take a look at this:

A tutorial is available here:

Looks pretty cool :-)
