Problem with "Language Fundamentals"

I was trying to solve mock tests in danchisholm's site(Language Fundamentals),had a very bad experience.I totally messed up with my answers.
I was bad at assuming the ranges of primitive types in hexadecimal and octal,and declaring the Strings and all primitive types using all permitted formats,bases and representaions.

Please advice,it will be helpful if u can provide good sites explaining this topic.

I do have a tutorials page. My book contains more information on those topics, but I don't want to post that material on the internet.
