Overriding static methods

Why can't static methods be overridden?

Because classes are not objects. In more object oriented languages than Java, such as Smalltalk, they are, and therefore class level methods are polymorphic, too.

I don't know why the Sun developers decided to implement Java this way, though...

Please don't post the same question in multiple forums, its confusing and makes the conversation difficult to follow.
