Alvin, your subject suggests that this is a question about the Just Java book which is being promoted this week. However, your question has nothing to do with the book. It's not even directed at Peter.

Please help us out by keeping general java questions seperate from the book promotion. I am going to edit your Subject so it is more relivent to your question. This will cause less confusion.

Hi, Alvin -

Reading the API docs before learning Java would be like reading a French dictionary without having learned French. I recommend learning Java first. Just by learning (and practicing!) the language, you will absorb much of the "technique" behind reading the API's.

Once you're familiar with the language, following the API's will make sense to you. You'll probably find yourself skipping around like you would with any reference work, such as a dictionary, where you look up a topic and, if you want to know more, you look up related topics and so on.

Hope that helps!

Give a man a fish, he'll eat for one day. Teach a man to fish, he'll drink all your beer.
Cheers, Jeff (SCJP 1.4, SCJD in progress, if you can call that progress...)

I have to agree. When I first started learning Java people kept mentioning the API. So I would go look at it but found it hard to comprehend right ayway. It wasn't until I understood Java better that the API started making sense.
