Anyone watched 'Sunny By Night' in last few days ?? If anyone has then what do you think about Sunil Gavaskar as a cricekting legend ??
I am really surprised with Gavaskar saying things like ...
' The last match may have spoiled Steve Waugh's farewell party but we don't care, afterall he is an Australian and we are Indians '
&&
' Steve Waugh was able to score 80 runs because of the poor field placement'
- when asked about Steve Waugh's batting in the 4th test match
&&
' Steve Waugh would have liked to score a century but what a player expects and what the public expects may not happen everytime ' - when he had to say last words in last night's programme.
&&
' .... But first things first, tomorrow is a great day for Indian cricket' - when asked about how he feels for Rohan Gavakar being called in for the ODIs against Australia.
What others have to say about this ??

Agree. I laughed loud when he called Gavaskar as "Sachin Gavaskar"

I think it showed Sunil's pettiness. It was very unprofessional of him to display his personal grudge against Steve Waugh in public. Steven Waugh remains one of the all time greats in cricket for both his performance with the bat and as a leader.
Maybe the incident at MCC many many years ago screwed up Sunny's mind all together.

You are right Paul. Sunil Gavaskar tried to downplay the innings of Australians everytime. India did performed good in the series but Aussies also performed like champions. Its not an easy task for any team to score more than 350 runs on the last day of a test match but Aussies did fight nicely.
It sounds justified to call Sachin Tendulkar as a cricketing legend. A very decent man, very talented, polite and one who always praises the opposing side irrespective of the result of the match.
It would have been great if Tony Greg was there asking questions to Sunil Gavaskar rather than someone who accepted whatever Gavaskar said

May be Gavaskar (as a commentator) is our reply to Ian Chappel (as a commentator).
Unlike Greg, Ian has always been critical and hard to please guy. He was among the supporter of that famous LBW decision given to Sachin on a bouncer by Mcgrath.
Yeah Steve was a great player, but I still believe the retirement was a bit over hyped. I am still failing to understand his extra ordinary contribution to game
He was a fighter, but he always had bunch of talented people around him, who all peaked at the right time. He was a match winner only because he was lucky enough to have people around him to ensure task is finished if he gets out. This was not the case with Sachin, we always expected him to be there till the last ball ....the last chennai test with Pakistan is an epitome of what I mean.
Steve vehemently supported sledging and was always an active paticipant.
Sachin never did that ...
Whenever Steve contributed in Aussie win he was portraited as a fighter .. what about Sachin? ... when he makes India win, match looks totally one-sided and making his contribution appear effortless ..
making us raise the doubts about his match winning capabilities compared to Waugh !!
I am among the many supporters of Waugh ... but the difference is that I do support him when he says "he was lucky enough to play 168 test matches for Australia" ... .. Lucky to have media along his side ... when he needed the most ...
May be Gavaskar just tried to speak this out in a different and probably in an appropriate way ...

I'm not a supporter of sledging either, but it is a factor of Australian cricket right down to the club level. It is seen as part of the mental side of the game. Others could argue that players should be able to take the field without death threats or fearing for their life from the crowd. It's an unfortunate down side of a great game.
but I still believe the retirement was a bit over hyped
It was hyped since he's been under pressure for a long time to retire. He refused to be forced to retire and finally did it on his own terms. As always it was the media pushing him to reture then creating the hype of the hero as he left. Take it all with a pinch of salt. I agree that he was lucky for the quality players he's had, but he was the captain and automatically the best amoung them. He held that position without challenge for many years and has an astounding win/loss record. Team contribution, sure, but it will still be measured as Steve Waugh's legacy.

I would say India performed better than Aussies. Aussies were expected to perform but that was not the case with Indians. Dont forget the statements issued by Warne and other against Indian team.

To me thats an euphemism for sledging.
And its not good for cricket esp. When you are aiming to take the "game" or "sport" globally.
You can't sledge during swimming or during 100m race ... does that mean these people are not mentally tough?

He refused to be forced to retire and finally did it on his own terms.

Not sure ... !!!

Being a captain doesn't mean you are the best in team. Ask Ganguly & Sachin.
Had Gilchrist been the captain for Australia instead for Waugh, statistics would not have been much different for Australia today. Whats your opinion on this? ...

Some of you said that Gavaskar tried to express his thoughts about Waugh as a player. But why Ganguly is considered to be great player. He hasn't also done something extra ordinary. India is winning because of Sachin, Sehwag, Dravid and some good bowling by Kuble and Zaheer. I don't think for a captain it matters anything more than winning the game. Waugh has give some great victory for Australia: not to forget a World Cup. Kapil is considered a legend though he wasn't such a great player but he got India a world cup because of which he is still in the news.

Ever watched a water-polo game? Players regularly disturb each other's private parts to put them off. It's not a high point, but it's part of the game. I'm glad the governing body has made official moves to stamp out racial comments, and offensive and other insulting behaviour is not tolerated, but sledging is just too difficult to regulate. Yes, I do think swimmers sledge each other on the blocks before the race starts.

I can only comment on the reports when he announced his retirement, but apparently his wife didn't even know. Pressure would have played a part in his decision, but he made the decision, it wasn't made for him.

I think it would be different. I'm not sure if it's the same in other teams, but the Australian team currently has a tradition where the captain has almost complete say on how the game is played during the game. The coach has almost no say at all. If there were more joint decisions it might be the same with Gilchrist at the helm, but I think the way Waugh was able to stamp his own method of play on the game and the team reflects his success as a captain.

Ganguly is great captain rather than a great player. India had sachin,Dravid ,Ganguly,Laxman,Srinath last time India toured but lost 3-0.

The same is the case with Waugh. He was a great captain because he got wins for Aussies. SIMPLE. And he did play some great innings for Australia. Isnt that enough reason not to downplay his capabilities.

You are forgetting what team Steve got and what Sourav got when they became the captain !!!
and today both the team are at the same level ... that too in Australia where Steve got the local and Steve Buckner's support ...
Still Steve was great ... but he got more than what he deserved .. so a bit lucky too

He did, but he got tremendous support from his team mate that is my point. final test, 4th day, under pressure, without McGrath, his bowler were bowling negative line to Indian batsman? Now thats not the attitude Steve's side is famous for ...
Greg Chappel commented rightly that Steve didn't got chance to experience much pressure due to team he got ... and when he got in 4th test .. his decision were very ordinary ...
Infact he said ... Taylor was better than Steve as a captain.
I never saw Steve doing what Imran did to Akram/Waqar or Ganguly did to Sehwag/Kumble/Yuvraj/Parthiv
Infact in this series he was very ordinary in every department, barring the fifth day evening ... !!!
Nevertheless, he will be missed ...
he got a wonderfully scripted farewell series ... which he deserved ...good for him and for the game ...
