Is this second edition of HF Java exam-oriented book like those HF Servlet & JSP or HF EJB? I used HF EJB to beat SCBCD exam and I believe that HF Servlet & JSP is also targeted to those who are going for SCWCD 1.4 exam...

I just would like to know if HF Java, Second Edition is good for SCJP 5.0 (Tiger)...

Thanks...

No. It is only book for beginner to learn new Tiger features.

As you know, Kathy and Bert had written the book Sun Certified Programmer & Developer for Java 2 Study Guide (Exam 310-035 & 310-027), and I believe they are going to update it to SCJP Tiger and SCJD Tiger.

what Nicholas said...

basically HF Java is a Java and OO intro, it now includes some of the most basic and important Tiger features. It is by no means a complete coverage of Tiger!

hth,

Bert

Nicho:

I was about to ask the same question; now that you did I will try to respond to it instead. I think HFJ is the book for SCJA; I was going through the content, I discovered there is a topic on EJB and other advanced topic; maybe to get the biginner to be able to spell EJB after reading the book - you sure get the gist.

But Bert, HF Servlet and HF EJB are leaning towards SCWCD and SCBCD exams... But I saw that those two book say "Passing the SCWCD" and "Passing the SCBCD" respectively... Well, HF Java doesn't say anything... So, Bert, dont't you think that the readers might confuse HF Java is also for those who are going for a certification?

Just curious, please don't mind...

Hello,

I spent some time going thro' the book at one of the bookstores.

I feel that if this book helps any beginner, it would also help a person preparing for the JCP. After all there are different kinds of exercises to test one's knowledge, thus helping the individual to gain a better understanding. While the Sierra-Bates JCP book is fantastic (I am studying from it currently for my JCP exam), I would definitely consider getting my personal copy of their new book.

Have a good one!

-Kiennjal

PS: the use of figures/diagrams (like tree diagrams, hand-written notes) also help many to understand concepts faster and more easily, at least for me it does!!!

HFJ is obviously not enough for studying SCJA because SCJA covers lots of other areas in addition to Core Java APIs. From the exam objectives, you could see that you also need to know J2EE and J2ME as well. Also, you need to know both client and server capability for handling Java.

I believe HFJ is useful for the 1st few sections, but not a full coverage on SCJA.

You might make an assumption that, if the statement "passing SCXXX exam" does not exist in the front cover, then it is NOT target for any specific exams.

Hi Guys -

HF was never intended to be a "certification series" or even just a Java series!

It just so happened that we were ready to start new books when the SCBCD exam was created, and when the SCWCD was updated. (Also, we felt those were popular exams, unlike the SCMAD which we love, but which is still growing into its popularity.)

So, try not to think about HF as about certification - we like to think of it as a way to tackle hard topics... so we're (with the help of some awesome co-authors), working on HTML, Flash, OO, Final Cut (movie making), maybe a little Algebra, maybe a little statistics...
