Would anyone recommend a small (NOT emacs, or any other big beast)
stand-alone editor for DOS / XP Windows. Shareware, feeware?
I would like it using various color fonts for declarations,
statements, etc. in Java, and perhaps C++, C.
I've heard about "textpad".

textpad is good, but it's not freeware. vim is free software, but it's harder to learn than Emacs; unless you're already a Unix aficionado, that one is unlikely to please you. tucows has many more to choose from.

I'm also fond of TextPad, enough so that I did pay for it ;-)

I think it was about $40.

I also recommend Textpad. Keywords, comments etc are highlighted for easy recognition.

I am not sure whether you can compile your code from within Notepad++

I have used the Free ware version of JCreator. Strait forward editor with colors. I use it as my hip-pocket editor.

You might give Edit+ a try.

Shareware US$30
