IT makes a chilling picture. The mastermind behind the September 11 attacks has told interrogators that he and his terrorist nephew leafed through almanacs of US skyscrapers when planning the operation. Sears Tower in Chicago and Library Tower in Los Angeles � which was "blown up" in the film Independence Day � were both potential targets, according to transcripts of interrogations of al-Qa'ida operations chief Khalid Shaikh Mohammed. "We were looking for symbols of economic might," he told his captors.
Khalid switched to two waves: hitting the east coast first and following up with a second attack. "Osama had said the second wave should focus on the west coast," he said. Zacarias Moussaoui, a French-Moroccan who had lived in London, was sent to the Pan Am international flight school in Minnesota to train for the west coast attack, according to Khalid. His instructor alerted the FBI, however, after the Moroccan showed no interest in landing planes � only in steering them. He was arrested in August 2001. Until now it had been widely believed that Moussaoui was meant to have been the 20th hijacker on September 11. The revelation by Khalid that he was part of a "second wave" is lent weight by the FBI's recent arrest of two other men who were allegedly part of the west coast conspiracy.
Innocent of being the 20th of the first wave and guilty of being the first on the second wave. And Lee Harvey Oswald is innocent because he didn't shoot Lincoln.
Well yes, Thomas. But in Germany he would be aquitted. So I think the US must do the decent thing and release this innocent man to his family. And when he files a lawsuit for unjust imprisonment we should pay up with a smile. It's the least we can do.....

I don't think anyone knows if he's innocent or guilty, though there does seem to be an awful lot of conviction. I'd like to see the whole thing go to court. M
Even if he's innocent of the crimes he was thought to have been a part of his statements have incriminated him for planning other crimes. AFAIK the active planning of a criminal act is itself a crime for which he can be prosecuted (maybe not in Germany or the entire Bundestag would have to be arrested for planning fraud ).

Yes, Jeroen. In Germany he would be aquitted. But not, I think, in France.....

Oh, the french are fairly active on that front. I think they would have picked him up. But they would have made some charge stand up rather than releasing him the way the Germans do.... [ May 05, 2004: Message edited by: Don Stadler ]
