Been at it for almost 10 months now and still don't look like that
I DID loose some 60 pounds which is a bit less than I set out to do but I'm not completely religious about it (I'm pragmatic, one pizza every other week won't hurt ).

When Sex Lives of the Potato Men came out, I suggested the dilemma facing the British film industry was whether to put the gun barrel to our heads or in our mouths. But with the release of Shaun of the Dead, I'm inclined to say the dilemma is whether to opt for Mot or Veuve Clicquot. Because this cheerful horror comedy, starring and co-written by Simon Pegg of Channel 4's Spaced, is as smart as paint. It's pacily directed, nicely acted and boasts a script crammed with real gags.

As demonstrated by at least one case, the side effects of the Atkins' diet include the propensity to fall and swell after death.

Is this a British expression? Is paint especially intelligent in the UK? Do you require that gallon cans of paint take IQ tests before they are placed on shelves?

When something has been painted it looks smart, well-presented.
Long John Silver in the Pirating Life : Now Jim, youre smart lad, smart as paint by my reckning. You wouldnt know of any such map now, would you?
From that we can infer the phrase has also come to mean clever-smart.

Haven't fallen or died (as far as I know, could be I died but didn't notice) since I started the diet
Veggie version? Don't think so...
Lessee, limit to 100 grams of veggies a day (after the first month, during that 40 grams).
No meat, no grain products and beans.
Would get kinda limited I think. You'd loose a lot of weight, but whether it would serve you well I doubt

Sounds like the Rice diet to me. There is a clinic at Duke Medical Center which runs a regime which starts with nothing but rice the first week then branches out to veggies, beans, and fruit.

Funny, travelling in the tube gives a similar effect. i.e.
Ever felt you were surrounded by zombies.

Except that rice is rich in carbohydrates and Atkins is all about limiting carbohydrates...
Effectively Atkins is the arch-demon of the Vegan movement in advocating the consumption of meat and the strict limitation of products derived from plants (animals being protein-based life forms and plants being carbohydrate-based life forms).
As humans are themselves made up of mainly proteins that's not such a bad idea, is it

I feel that the Rice diet is more likely to produce zombies than the Atkins diet is. Atkins would produce vampires IMHO. All that red meat you know.....

Or Arch-Demons? Hmmm, there's a thought.....
I wonder if Al Qaida is partial to the Atkins diet? Or the Bush neocons for that matter....

What does neocon really mean ? Some paper suggested it's anti-Jewish, really.
The article was on Robert Kagan who wrote Paradise and Power
(Americans are trigger-happy and European pacificists)

" I no longer inderstand what neoconservative means. The highest -toned description I suppose is a category of people who believe in the importance of American power in advancing liberal values. But there are times when I feel like neocon is a code-word for saying conservative Jew. We've got to the point of making sure we know who is and who is not a Jew in this debate." He adds in a tone of surprise. "This is not a reaction I usually have."
He has been rather puzzled by being repeatedly described as a neoconservative . He thinks of his foreign policy ideas as liberalism, but liberalism with power" associating himself as the stance with the Truman White House. He served a Republican Secretary of State as a speechwriter but he was also , he points out a "very harsh critic of 1990s Republicanism which was neo-isolationist".

What do these neo- words mean ?

neo means new or renewed.
It's usually used to indicate a resurgence of something that died earlier (like neo-classicism in art and architecture) or by enemies of a movement to make it look like that movement is only a cheap mimmick of something else (usually bad) in order to discredit them (like neo-nazism, neo-conservative).
It's also the name of a movie character played by Keanu Reeves in the Matrix trilogy of movies (the name without doubt having been chosen deliberately to indicate his role as a messiah)

Thanks Jeroen.
Here's a snippet related to Atkins Diets.
While Americans are getting fatter they are also getting shorter compared to Europeans : At the time of the American Revolution , the average American male was two inches taller than the average British male. Now he is almost 1/2 " shorter at 5ft 10".
These days the real giants live in the Netherlands
where the average height of men is over 6 feet.
The Dutch are shooting up at such a rate that hotel owners are busy lengthening beds and raising door lintels. Ambulances are being redesigned because patients are so tall that their feet stick out the back. The Americans by contrast have stopped growing and may even be shrinking.
It may be due to the "great social inequality that now exists in the United States," John Komlos of Munich University who has spent decades researching the phenomenon, told the Observer."In Europe there is- in most countries- good health service provision for most members of society and plenty of protein in most people's diets. As a result children do not suffer illnesses that would blight their growth or suffer problems of malnutrition."
On another page , Brazilian beef industry growth is due mainly to globalisation. (and Atkins) Until 1991 ranchers in the Amazon sold most of their meat locally, now with access to the entire world market Brazil is the world's largest beef exporter. The European Union is the biggest importer of Brazilian beef.

When I see a sweeping statement like this from a European I have to wonder whether he is speaking from real knowledge of the US or just blowing smoke out his butt. The 'great social inequality' of the US is something which is accepted by Europeans or Americans who haven't stir far from the coastal centers (places such as Boston, New York, Washington DC, San Francisco and LA). Insofar as 'great social inequality' exists in the US it is most obvious in these cities.
There is a paradox here in that the cities where the political establishment is most bothered about 'inequality' seem also to be the least equal (and least likely to equalize). San Francisco is a perfect example. It's probably the most left-wing polity in the US and certainly one of the most unequal in large part due to the fact that 'affordable housing' basically doesn't exist anywhere within 50 miles (I'm tempted to claim 100 miles) of San Francisco.
Contrast this with cities almost anywhere else in the US. I moved from New Jersey to Durham, North Carolina during the height of the homeless crisis. No apartment was available for much less than $600 a month anywhere within the New York area, and those only in public housing or the most dangerous and unsalubrious neigborhoods. 'Decent' housing began at $1000 a month and went up from there. The contrast with Durham was marked. There was a plentiful supply of relatively decent apartments for as little as $200 to $300 a month. I had a large apartment in the top floor of an old house in a great neighborhood for $500 a month. Unsurprisingly Durham had no visible 'homeless' problem at all. And Durham was far more representative of the US norm than New York will ever be.
The European critics of the US seem to be almost completely ignorant of the center of the US. They seem to judge the US by the cities that they see (Washington DC, New York, etc) then apply those observations with a broad brush to the rest of the country.

poverty and social exclusion are as much a problem in the UK. Trevor Philips head of the Commisiion for Racial Equality is proposing to kill off multi-culturalism and return to core Britishness.
Britain formost of it's history has been a multi-cultural state. HAd you asked an inhabitant of Doncaster whether he thought of him/herself as Angle,Saxon, Huguenot, Jute or Dane he would have thought you mad.
"core" instead of "neo".

Perhaps San Franciscoans invest their money elsewhere. There has to be extreme lowering of ethics to become a landlord for cheap housing. Since Thatchers time every other 10th person became a landlord. Wwhat kind of effect did that have on English society ?
Thatchers children were taught to respect nothing but money so since Teachers are poorly paid they ceased to be respected and instead are villified and abused. House property boom in the UK is fuelled by buy-to-let demand to the point there is no capital gain anymore.
There is a belief that those who are landlords do not put themselves out to excel in any other fields that they may work in.
