Woodward: Bush Secretly Made Iraq War Plan
"President Bush secretly ordered a war plan drawn up against Iraq less than two months after U.S. forces attacked Afghanistan and was so worried the decision would cause a furor he did not tell everyone on his national security team, says a new book on his Iraq policy.
Bush feared that if news got out about the Iraq plan as U.S. forces were fighting another conflict, people would think he was too eager for war"

aren't warplans supposed to be secret to prevent the enemy from finding out about them?

No. You're not supposed to plan before declaring war. This probably violates something in the UN charter or something. 'Open War Plans, Openly arrived at' or something. Kofi Annan will state that he is 'disappointed', though it isn't clear whether it's about the war plan or the conduct of his son.....

You mean *gasp* Bush thought that Iraq might be near the top of the list of military threats that might need to dealt with during his tenure? And they were "secret" as well? Oh the horror!
We doubtless have "war plans" covering just about every single remotely possible source of military tension. I can't even believe that this is "news".

yes you are. There were warplans for fighting the WarPac from the early 1950s and that never happened.
It always paid to be prepared.
You can be sure the Iraqis had prepared plans to fight the USA, they just didn't work as well

Shocking, isn't it Jason? The US intemperately makes 'war plans' concerning perfectly inoffensive little countries (think North Korea). Has done for years and intends to continue. It's enough to compell the boys at the Guardian to call for the smelling salts (or a snort of cocaine more like).

What's wrong with invading Canada?
We almost invaded Belgium in 1918 after the Germans did the dirty work and pretty much annihilated their armed forces. The army was mobilised, but the queen stopped them at the last moment.

And I was thinking that Iraqis are working on their prepared plan.

Here's the real shocker: this was part of a larger plan for war against the United Kingdom. Egads! The government actually doing its job! Planning for worst-case scenarios!

Not that we were the only imperialist warmongers - Canada developed a plan for war with the U.S. in the 1920's.

Well, it was 1935 after all. Ramsey McDonald was PM of the UK and losing it quite a bit by then. Or Stanley Baldwin, I forget. Either way the PM was losing it. Oswald Mosely might have seized power and the US may have had to take over Canada for it's own good.
Maybe, just maybe some US Army officers were trying to get promoted by producing a war plan rather than sitting on their butts? Perhaps someone was promoting a regional airport as a source of jobs and profits and using a military argument to bolster the case?
