The first three years .. can the English language survive?

"The vast majority of our imports come from outside the
country."
- George W. Bush

"If we don't succeed, we run the risk of failure."
- George W. Bush

"One word sums up probably the responsibility of any Governor,
and that one word is 'to be prepared'."
- George W. Bush

"I have made good judgments in the past. I have made good
judgments in the future."
-George W. Bush

"The future will be better tomorrow."
George W. Bush

"We're going to have the best educated Ame! rican people in the
world."
- George W. Bush

"I stand by all the misstatements that I've made."
- George W. Bush

"We have a firm commitment to NATO, we are a part of NATO. We
have a firm commitment to Europe. We are a part of Europe."
George W. Bush

"Public speaking is very easy."
George W. Bush

"A low voter turnout is an indication of fewer people going to
the polls."
George W. Bush

"We are ready for any unforeseen event that may or may not
occur."
- George W. Bush

"For NASA, space is still a high priority."
- George W. Bush

"Quite frankly, teachers are the only profession that teach our
children."
- George W. Bush

"It isn't pollution that's harming the environment. It's the
impurities in our air and water that are doing it."
-George W. Bush

"It's time for the human race to enter the solar system."
- George W. Bush

And something to be REALLY worried about:

Remember, 2004 is an election year!!!

The problem with stuff like this is that you can put any name under it and someone will believe it. I grabbed a quote randomly and googled it and found that the quote belonged to Dan Quayle, not GWB.
http://www.brainyquote.com/quotes/quotes/d/danquayle100411.html
But who cares? Politicians speak a lot and I am sure that you can find some nutty quote from any politicans.

Here's a pretty good commentary on posts like the one that started this:

One more:
"The vast majority of our imports come from outside the country."
False, apparently. What he actually said was:
"It is clear our nation is reliant upon big foreign oil. More and more of our imports come from overseas."
Obviously, what he meant to say was, "More and more of our oil comes from overseas." I'll bet everyone who was listening knew exactly what he was talking about. Interestingly, I was recently reading an article that these kind of mistatements are a sign of intelligence. It has to do with multi-threading of thoughts. Smart people tend to juggle a lot of ideas in their mind at once and their mouth can't keep up with their mind and they tend to misspeak.

Not just that.
Strange as it may sound imports could be locally produced. Now there's real destruction of the language by legal definitions (so what else is new?).
As to NASA still being focussed on space, there's nothing weird in that statement.
NASAs public face may be the space program, but they are the National Aeronautic and Space Administration which grew from NACA which had nothing to do with space at all when started.
They do a lot of R&D that has little or nothing to do with space and everything with aerospace engineering.
It was NASA who flew the first swingwing aircraft, who did fundamental work on laminar flow research, supersonic flight, etc. etc. (a lot of it in conjunction with the military of course, but they are heavily involved).
"If we don't succeed, we run the risk of failure."
So? The world isn't black and white. Lack of success could mean no success, it doesn't have to mean failure. A situation in which noone wins doesn't mean that everyone looses.
"We have a firm commitment to NATO, we are a part of NATO. We
have a firm commitment to Europe. We are a part of Europe."
"Ich bin ein Berliner" came from someone who had to have someone tell him where the city was...
"A low voter turnout is an indication of fewer people going to
the polls."
Where's the problem with that? It's true isn't it?
etc. etc. etc.
