My wife has a '98 KIA Sportage. What a heap of doo-doo. If I had known her before she got the vehicle, she wouldn't have gotten it. A couple of months ago, the air-bag warning light came on. The dealership told us that it would cost $450+ to replace the sensor. Pathethic. It seems we (and even she, shortly after she bought it) have had this junker in the shop at least once every two to three months. Since being told the price of that sensor, we've been driving around with the warning light on. Now, I don't know if that means that any second the air-bag in the steering wheel could suddenly blow up, but it sure is exciting driving with that in mind!

My experience with Korean car, Hyundai has been brilliant so far never had any issues what so ever on this 97 Accent coupe, it has nearly 90K miles of bumpy country roads on it! Sure they dont match the reliability of Japanese Toyota, but they are pretty good value for your money!

Not surprising. Lease companies over here are shunning them, either banning them outright or asking extreme prices for people wanting one.
They started selling here maybe 10 years ago, and a few years later closed shop leaving all existing customers without a dealer network or even a supplier for spare parts.
2-3 years ago they started again with a different logo and a new line of cars, new dealership network, etc. etc...
Wouldn't touch them for anything. They're on my long shortlist of cars to never buy together with Lada and Zastava.

On the bright side, if it blows up in your face for no apparent reason while driving, you could sue them and be a millionaire unless of course something along the lines below is mentioned in the purchase contract.
'Kia will not be responsible for the malfunction of any or all of the accessories including but not limited to airbags, horn, steering, transmission, brakes etc. Under no circumstances can Kia be held responsible even for something that is clearly Kia's fault. In addition, by purchasing a Kia, you are accepting the fact that you will not resort to any legal recourse and Kia's say in this will be binding and final. Also by purchasing this vehicle, you agree that US laws will not be applicable in this case.'

How anyone can take a car manufacturer seriously who once used "Darn good cars" as their slogan is beyond me.
A few of my friends have Kia Sportages and have had nothing but problems.

At least the name is appropriate. You get a good workout walking to the nearest emergency telephone to call the AA every other day
