Hello I am thinking of learning java and eventually try to create games with it. Is this a good idea?

Welcome to the JavaRanch.
As with all things in software, the answer is "it depends". What kind of game are you writing? What platform is it targeted for? Are there better language options out there? There's a forum here for discussing Java game development. Have a browse.
