2 days ago I got the seat 12A on the flight from Dsseldorf to Shanghai ( Airbus A330). This time not only there was no wing right below my window but also there were two windows at my left hand side. The weather was okay and inside the plane it was incredibly noisy. I couldn't sleep so took some pictures. As usual I reduced the size to 800*600 for posting. But this time most of the images were manipulated using Nikon Editor. It was cloudy in Germany if I didn't enhance the contrast, the pictures are almost not viewable. I didn't do anything else besides the contrast enhancement. Those unmanipulated images are commented.

The first 6 pictures were taken within 30 minutes after the taking off, the plane was ascending at that time. I guess it was still in Germany. The rest of the pictures were taken 2-3 hours before the landing, it should be somewhere in China. At that time the hight of the plane was over 11000 metres above the sea. It is one of the most beautiful sun rise I've ever seen. The images are weak, you have to try to see it in person if there's a chance, really amazing.

Thats an excellent idea! I have booked my holidays for next month, flying to India from Dublin, via London and Dubai - if clouds stay away, and if I get a window seat with a clear window panel, I 'll see what my Sony 717 can do.

Great pics! Good job!

Thank you for all your nice words.

I don't know. I guess it lies in northeast Germany or some country northeast to Germany. The plane was pretty high then, the original photo is not so clear-cut.

Thank you Joyce. The most important camera settings for the scenaries in this thread is:

focusing model: Aparture Priority
metering model: AF spot ( partial )

for the images in daytime ( the ones I took in Germany ), normally one doesn't want to emphasize one singal object on the ground, rather, a big depth of field( set your aparture at at least f 8.0. If you are using SLR then bestly f 16.0 or above, if the light is strong enough to keep the shutter speed faster than 1/60 s. ) can capture the texture on the ground and the also the cloud.

when the sun rises, one can make the image really dark or pretty bright, depends on what kind of a feeling one wants to present. If you measure the light on the dark sky you'll get a very bright image, the texture of the cloud will be clear but you might not be able to capture the shape of the sun. But if you measure the light right at the sun, you might get too dark an image, everything is not viewable except the sun. Matrix metering usually brings you a pretty bright image with a completely white sun.

Oh that sounds really good! About 1.5 years ago I was hesitating a lot about which camera to buy: Sony 717 or Nikon cp5700. I read the detailed reviews of both of the two cameras on dpreview.com and both of them have their unique strengths. Sony 717 has a much shorter starting time, focusing time and image-storing time, for those who like to shoot sport or stage, the cp5700 might be unbearable. I bearly shoot any sport or stage, so lucky this big drawback of cp5700 doesn't bug me too much. Then, 717 works better on focusing and its images are sharper while cp5700 has excellent white balance and its colour appears very natural without any green or yellow cast. Oh yes we have to check what the sony 717 can do on plane.

More for Nikon's fans, cp5700 is an excellent one among the 5.0 million pixel prosumer peers, but very sadly, it seems to me that the new cp8700 is not so outstanding among the 8.0 million pixel prosumer peers. While the other brands have so great improvements for their 8.0 M pixel prosumer babies, Nikon seems like merely changed the cp5700's CCD to a 8.0 million pixel one and rushed to the market without better image processing. More information and detailed reviews of the family of 8.0 million pixel prosumer cameras can be found at dpreview.com.

The day before yesterday I spent four hours ( due to the slow internet connection )watching the video I found in Kishore Dandu's latest blog( I found the link from his signature ). It's a presentation on the Java Technology made by Bruce Eckel. Very informative and insightful, even more interesting than most movies, well worth the time. Thank you very much, Kishore! The Bruce Eckel guy looks soooooooo good and he has a nice voice.....

Ellen,

Sorry for being curious, but the portfolio in www.photo.net, under the name Kim Slonaker, is that yours?

Ah the greenjay! It's not my photo, but Ms Kim Slonaker's. I like that picture very much so that put it on the temp index page of my homepage, but a link was added to offer the copyright/source information about the greenjay picture. The colour of the greenjay doesn't look photo-like but painting-like, and the colour of the leaves in the background is so harmony to the colour on the bird. One of my favourite pictures at photo.net.

Shooting birds or insects is challenging. They are usually moving quickly, hardly cooperate with you or sometimes they pose cutely and the light is very good but too far away from you, without a >600 mm tele lens you can do nothing. I got several okay pictures of cats or dogs, but all my pictures of geese, ducks, swans and bees are big failures.

Nikon has always believed strongly in user responsibility in their highend models (which the 8700 is).
Therefore they don't include the automated functions which "soup up" the image in camera that other manufacturers do.
For people wanting snapshots that makes a Nikon less desirable, for more serious photographers it's a big advantage in that they get the REAL output to work with without any potential loss of data.

dpreview doesn't take that into account in all their reviews and is getting worse. I've long suspected there's money from a certain camera manufacturer with a name like a heavy firearm involved in that site limiting their objectivity

I have a cp5000 myself. It's a decent enough camera if you don't want fast action. The 5700 is faster and was what I would have gotten had it been a tad less expensive at the time.

Will post some shots of my trip back from the UK maybe tonight. Not as spectacular (short daytime trip) but should give some idea.

Sorry about resurrecting this thread, but I meant to post these here last summer!

Some of them have been enhanced rather aggressively, but no other tweaking.

Flying over Alps, January 2005.

Flying over Alps, January 2005.

Landing in Cochin, Kerala.

Flying over Saudi Arabia or Iraq, last summer.

Flying out of UK over English Channel - eastern most bit of mainland UK.

Very good original composition, and the digital enhancing turned out quite good too, the first picture(in night) would be a fabulous one if the noise can be reduced a bit. Well done! Congratulations! I like the last picture very much.
