getting experience w/open source projects

I'm getting to the point where I'm kind of an intermediate level programmer; right now I'm going through the java and xml book getting familiar with sax; I understand the basic principles of OO programming; abstraction, polymorphism, etc, but it's all still abstract. I've pretty much done everything with exercises.

I want to start doing some actual work and was wondering what people here reccomended in terms of open source projects. I was browsing through and saw some interesting things.

Any other good sites to check out? Any reccomendations on how to proceed; should I try to do testing before answering an ad as a developer?

There's Apache Commons:

Apache Commons Open-Source

I am looking over...

... the class FileUtils to help with File I/O.
... the Derby database engine
... the FTPClient code
