Setting PATH environment variable (HELP!)

Argh! So I'm using "Head first Java - 2nd Edition" to set up Java on my Windows Vista machine for my next programming course and the instructions on doing so are way to vague.

All it tells me to do is to:
"add an entry to your PATH environment variable that points to the /bin directory inside the main Java directory."
"That bin directory is the one you need a PATH to so that when you type
% javac at the command-line, your terminal will know how to find the javac compiler."

I have not the slightest idea on how to correctly set this up so that it will work correctly. I looked through the documentation for the SDK and what I did find did not work at all. Thanks for the help!

Hi Cody,
I've got the same book and same problem. Would you be kind enough to share how you took care of this?

Hi Terry, welcome to JavaRanch!

To set the PATH, see step 4 of Sun's installation instructions for Windows. Let us know how this works for you.
