Welcome to JavaRanch!

If you're just starting out, I recommend Sun's Getting Starting tutorial. This will take you through the steps of downloading and installing Java (if you haven't already), and then compiling and running your first program.

Let us know how that goes -- we're here to help. (If you have problems or questions about downloading and installing, please remember to tell us what operating system you're using.)

After that, I recommend getting a good introductory Java book, like Head First Java by Sierra and Bates.
