Well, if JVM is closed-source and Java == JVM is true, then Java must be closed-source too.

But Java == JVM is false. Therefore the fact that JVM is closed-source says nothing about Java at all.

Sun is in the process of open-sourcing the JDK, which includes the JVM, the class libraries, and various tools. I don't think anyone claims that Java is open source while that process isn't finished.
