Hi Gurus,

I am new to Java. Can anybody tell me, what is the front end(GUI) used in Java web based applications? I was told that Swings/Applets are rarely used. Is there are a 3rd party took to design GUI for Java based applications?

Suresh,
Welcome to the JAVA world

GUI for web based application cannot be created in Swing/AWT. It has to be created using HTML tags. Nowadays, several open source frameworks are available, to name a few Struts 2.0, Spring MVC, JSF etc.

Web browsers use HTML, so a web application running on a server usually generates HTML web pages that are sent to the user's browser. In Java, web applications usually consist of servlets and JSP pages to generate the HTML.

A JSP (Java Server Page) is a template of an HTML page; it contains HTML code and pieces of Java code to generate the dynamic parts of the page at the moment the user fetches it from the server. It works in a similar way to how ASP works in Microsoft .NET, or how PHP works.

Google Web Toolkit is one of the coolest way to desgin GUI in java.

Design and implement GUI in java. Tookit will convert it into javascript and html based UI. Browser related differences are taken care of by toolkit only. Maintainance/debugging all made easy.
No match for Google Web toolkit.
